"Matta-Clark was a pioneer figure in the development of the artistic community in New York City's SoHo (South of Houston) neighborhood. A site-specific artist and installation artist, he came to be   known for "building cuts," in which he cut into and dismantled abandoned buildings to expose layers of architectural history and create new structures in the process".
